New Year, Best You

It happened so quickly, but somehow we’ve said good-bye to another year and welcomed ourselves into 2016. Like New Year’s Eve itself, many people place too much expectation for a “New Year, New You”. Well, I think it’s time to put an end to the madness. Here are 5 tips to dump the idea of a “new” you and help embrace the best you this year.

1. Make time for yourself

2015 was just the tip of a mental health awareness iceberg. We’re learning more and more each day how important it is to carve out time for ourselves. Whether that be in meditation, adult coloring, or taking a nature walk. Make sure to set aside at least 10 minutes a day to be with your own thoughts, process, and quit down. You have the rest of the day to rush around and be your busy self.

2. Stop the dieting

Eating is an amazing part of life. It shouldn’t be a moment to be feared or feel bad about. Instead focus on reaching a healthy balance with food. Make sure to incorporate leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. Remember it’s also more than okay to cheat a little and indulge in your favorite not-so-good foods when you have a craving. I’m not saying you should have a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough ice cream (aka heaven) every night. But, a healthy lifestyle is about balancing a healthy eating regime which also includes your favorite cravings. There’s something you can commit to long term.

3. Be active

I’m not saying kill yourself running 22 miles every day. But, if that’s your thing, then I applaud and scream from the mountain tops for you! Not everyone is a runner, not everyone is a cyclist, not everyone is a cross-fit god. We’re all unique, which means our activities are too. Find something that makes you move and makes you happy.

4. Get your beauty sleep

We’ve heard it all: sleep helps your memory, your skin, your focus, and your overall health. Yet, most of us are only sleeping 5 hours or less a night… not scientifically recommended. To be the best you, means you have to take care of you, and a good nights’ sleep takes care of you all around: mind, body, and soul.

5. Love yourself

Above all, to become your best self, means you have to realize just how absolutely amazing you are. We’re all imperfect, even if we forgot to meditate one day, or had one too many sweets another, and didn’t sleep well. Every day is an opportunity to take a step in the right direction. You’re already reading this post which means you’re on the right path. Self-love leads to more effective self-care and most importantly - happiness. So go ahead love yourself because you’re pretty great.

Live well!
